The livelihood and well-being of farmers intertwine closely with the environment. Recent extreme weather events driven by climate change have posed devastating threats to both human lives and farms.
Adopting safe and sustainable farming practices not only protects the farmers and attracts consumers but also lessens the ecological impact that agriculture has on the environment. This also helps lessen environmental threats to the farm. At the end of the day, it is the farmer who will reap the benefits.
This course highlights how farmers can reduce the harm of certain farming practices on themselves, their consumers and the environment. It will also cover the recognition that they can gain as a sustainable farming expert. This course is divided into three subtopics:
- Why do you need to protect your farm?
- Good and Sustainable Agricultural Practices
- Applying for green certificates
At the end of this course, participants will learn:
- How unsafe practices impact farmers such as the incorrect use of pesticides and chemicals.
- The effects of unsustainable agriculture on the environment, human health and farm profitability.
- Strategies for pest management, use of renewable energy for farm operations and livestock waste and disease management.
- The importance of green certifications like myGAP and myOrganic for business growth and export and how to prepare a farm for certification.
